When Life Gets Tangled, Knit A Few Rows

Some weeks, life feels like a tangle of yarn — you can see the shape of what you meant to do, but somehow it’s all knotted up with everything else that’s going on.

Lately, that’s been me. Between the usual juggle of work, family, and the unpredictable turns that life seems to love throwing our way, there have been days when it’s all just a bit much. Grief still finds me in quiet corners, especially as the seasons change. Sometimes I just stop and breathe… and pick up my knitting.

There’s something about those first few rows — the gentle click of the needles, the rhythm of knit and purl — that slows everything down. It’s not about finishing a project or ticking something off the list. It’s about reclaiming a small piece of calm in the middle of everything else.

I’ve learned that I don’t need a free afternoon or a perfectly tidy house. Even five minutes of knitting can be enough to remind me that I’m still here, still creating, still capable of making something soft and beautiful in a world that sometimes feels hard and messy.

Even when the knitting is a commission, and not a personal project, I still find it gives me peace and comfort. I am so lucky to have this craft as a way of life.

So if life feels tangled right now, try this: sit down, take a breath, and knit a few rows. Let the yarn run through your fingers, feel the tension ease just a little, and remind yourself that you’re allowed to pause.

Because even when life is complicated, those simple stitches can still hold peace.
